Symptoms of Andropause, Male Menopause – Low Male Hormone Levels

The condition of male menopause (andropause) is caused by a decline in male hormones. These hormones are testosteronethyroidhuman growth hormone (HGH) and DHEA. Male hormones start to decline in the mid-twenties and effects can usually be felt by age 35. Every man will become andropausal and no one escapes it. Andropause symptoms can be easily corrected by replacing lost hormones.

Did You Know?

4 out of 5 men ages 35+ have low hormone symptoms.

Andropause – Self Detection

Many of the below andropause symptoms are commonly associated with declining male hormones and are often misdiagnosed and treated as individual symptoms e.g. depression is often treated by doctors with an anti-depressant rather than as an issue of low testosterone. Decreases in testosterone (Low T levels) and other male hormone levels play an intricate roll in these symptoms and are magnified with age. If you have all or some of these symptoms, you may be andropausal.

  • Decreased energy
  • Decreased mental quickness
  • Decreased desire for physical activity
  • Decreased muscle tone
  • Increase in body fat, particularly around the mid-section
  • Night sweats and trouble sleeping
  • Mild to moderate irritability
  • Depression, or loss of eagerness and enthusiasm for daily life
  • Decreased desire for intimacy

Low Sex Drive

The first symptom that most people think of when you say ‘low testosterone’ is a reduced libido. From my experience, when you have low T you just don’t really think about sex much at all. It generally bothers the man suffering from low T much less than it bothers his partner.

For our female patients:  If you are in a relationship with a man aged over 35 and he doesn’t want sex anymore, get his T levels checked. When a guy with low T gets his T level in check he can literally go from ‘birthday and Valentines day’ to almost every day within a month. It’s really that striking.

Erectile Dysfunction

Think you got ED? Before you reach for the Viagra, try getting your T level checked first. One study has shown that testosterone therapy resolved ED issues in one third of men who tried it.

Lack of Energy / Depression / Brain Fog.

These are the symptoms that nobody seems to talk about, even though plenty of studies have definitively proven the link. Within a few weeks your mood improves dramatically and your brain just works ‘quicker’.

Decreased Muscle/Increased Fat

Low testosterone causes obesity, and obesity causes low testosterone.  Numerous studies have proven that men who start testosterone therapy gain muscle and lose fat very quickly.

The Treatment:  Male Hormone Therapy

The above symptoms will start to improve in 7 to 14 days with healthy hormone levels and if 1) you practice good lifestyle – control your consumption of refined carbohydrates and 2) you are “creatively” active i.e. build activity into your day or start an organized exercise program – within 4 to 6 weeks you will feel like a new person.

Is Testosterone Replacement and Hormone Replacement Therapy Safe?

If done correctly, replacing hormones for men is safe. We stay as close as possible bio-identical natural hormones i.e. hormones identical to the hormones produced naturally by the body. These are not the synthetic hormones made in a laboratory and used by some athletes and body builders.

  • Work with a doctor who knows male age related hormone decline.
  • Test all pertinent hormone – testosterone, thyroid, estrogen, DHEA, Growth Hormone (treating testosterone without monitoring estrogen is dangerous)
  • Replace hormones to healthy therapeutic levels – approximately what you had at age 25 to 30.
  • Monitor results by retesting and patient feedback
  • Insure good lifestyle – diet and exercise.  Replacing hormone without attention to lifestyle would be like a high definition (HD) TV without HD service.  The importance on lifestyle can not be overstated.

If hormone treatment is done correctly, you will begin feeling results in 1 to 2 weeks.  It is not only safe, it is healthy.  There are now numerous studies supporting the health benefits of healthy hormones to virtually all body systems; heart, brain, circulatory, skeletal, etc.

Optimal Hormone Levels

Optimal hormone levels are the levels that work best for you.  For example, the laboratory tested range for total testosterone is 240ng to 1100ng.  Most men will start feeling the effects of low testosterone at about 600ng and symptoms increase as testosterone continues to decline.  The doctor that tests testosterone for a patient having symptoms, and gets result in the lower half of the range and uses the words “you are fine, you are in the normal range” or  “you are normal for your age” – is doing their patient a serious disservice. These levels can be OPTIMIZED to replenish a man’s testosterone to a level that it positively affects him.

Side Effects

There should be no side effects if done correctly.

Why is testing/retesting so important?

It is the only way of knowing what is happening with your hormones within your body.
For example: As men age and hormones decline, men will often lose muscle and gain fat. Fat contains an enzyme called aromatase.  Aromatase works to convert testosterone to estrogen. Elevated estrogen depresses sex drive and is dangerous, particularly to the prostate. We counter this by increasing testosterone and suppressing estrogen as necessary. Over the course of three to six months of healthy hormones and good lifestyle, men will lose fat, regain muscle and as a result cease to have a conversion problem. This could not be assessed or managed without testing and retesting.

Another example:  Men will sometimes say they feel great but their sex drive is still not at an acceptable level. By retesting we can make adjustments and often solve the problem.
