DAY #6
To Love Yourself, Allow For Space For Joy:

Try a Galentine instead of a Valentine!

Have you ever seen a trampoline in a neighbor’s back yard and remembered the joy you felt bouncing away for hours on one just like it when you were a kid? Letgirl-trampoline-940x627 those feelings of joy and play that you had as a kid come rushing back to you. There’s a lot of joy out there, and I want to tell you to allow yourself to experience it, but, it’s harder than it should be oftentimes.

We live in an age of rabid self-promotion and vanity, with women bombarding social media with selfie after selfie, filtered and photoshopped perfect pics of faces and bodies, but never exposing their REAL selves. We sell how we want others to see us. Everyone else’s lives look great from the socially-polished iPhone shots, but in reality we may have confused vanity for reality and true love of self and soul.  And we forget it is all an illusion and tend to get a bit too serious about it all sometimes, self-creating unnecessary angst. Basically, we start to feel bad about ourselves. All self-misery has its roots in self-pity, and all self-pity is rooted in comparison of your reality to others’ “selfie” lives.  If you take everything too seriously, especially yourself, you’ll just find yourself backsliding from the steps you’ve already made toward loving yourself more.  We then rapidly lose our capacity to feel joy and love.
1) remember that what you see of people on social media and of celebrities in tabloids isn’t necessarily reality,
2) let us loosen up and be a little less serious about it all,  and
3) get together with your girlfriends who know who you really are, warts and all, and love you anyway!
Loosen up and laugh when you can with those you love.  And especially learn to laugh at yourself and your circumstances. Getting together with real gal-pals can pull you back to reality.
How can you relax and find a little slice of love-pie right before Valentine’s Day?photo Try Galentine’s Day! It is a holiday Amy Poehler’s Parks and Rec character Leslie Knope created that occurs every year on Feb. 13, the day before Valentine’s Day.
As Leslie herself explains, “Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
Basically, it’s like Valentine’s Day, only instead of celebrating the love you have for your significant other, you spend it with your best girlfriends, who all love and support each other. Leslie chooses to observe the day with brunch (her other true love).
Allow yourself to have fun and feel joy in the present moment. You are now making progress once again toward self-love.
